History of Handball. as told by Tom O’Connor. Growing up in Ireland in the 50’s, there were certain facts that were perceived as being self-evident; the sun rose in the east, America was the land of opportunity and handball was an Irish invention. We grew up with stories of Fionn Mc Cool, Cuchulainn and other legendary heroes who, emerging from the Celtic twilight, would relax after their great deeds in battle and hunting by playing hurling (ariel hockey) and handball.

Handball (also four square, n-square - where n is the number of players - or downball) is a ball game played in schoolyards in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, South Africa, China and South East Asia. Brief History of Handball The game of Handball was founded at the end of the 19 th century in the northern parts of Europe, specifically in Germany and in Scandinavia. But the modern game of Handball was carved in 1917 in Germany and since then it has gone through several amendments as well.

To change that in 29 October 1919 the German Professor of the Normal School of Physical Education in Berlin, Karl Schelenz with the help of Max Heiser and Erich Konig worked to make handball a mixed and competitive sport.
The team handball game of today was codified at the end of the 19th century in northern Europe: primarily in Denmark, Germany, Norway and Sweden. The first written set of team handball rules was published in 1906 by the Danish gym teacher, lieutenant and Olympic medalist Holger Nielsen from Ordrup grammar school, north of Copenhagen.
